Lanna teak: from stump to sawmill, and the treaty courts
Follow one teak log from a forest in Chiang Mai, Lampang, Phrae, Nan or Mae Hong Son to a sawmill in Bangkok or Moulmein on a real-river map, step by step from girdling, elephant hauling and hammer marks to floating, rafting and the duty station; plus a game: which court heard a forest case in the era of the Chiang Mai treaties. Every step has Kham Mueang words from the dictionary and its sources.
How to use it
First tab: pick a forest and use ‹ › or ▶ to follow the log step by step; switch between good rains and a dry year. Below the map are the route split and the logs reaching Bangkok. Second tab: read a case, choose a court, then read the answer and its sources.
What it teaches
How Lanna teak travelled from the forest to world markets and how many years it took, the Kham Mueang words of the trade (dang sung, long pae, ka to), and how the Chiang Mai treaties of 1874 and 1883 changed which court heard cases of British subjects.
